A funding rate is a periodic payment exchanged between long and short traders in a perpetual futures contract, designed to keep the contract's price anchored to the underlying spot price. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when negative, shorts pay longs. Rates are typically settled every few hours and are commonly annualized for comparison across periods.
On Bitcoin's USDⓈ-M perpetual market, the average annualized funding rate has been +11.92%, with rates negative on 12.60% of days.
