About Zcash

What is Zcash?

Zcash is a peer-to-peer digital currency designed to support both transparent payments and transactions whose details are protected through cryptography. Its native asset, ZEC, is used to transfer value and pay network transaction fees. The protocol descends from Bitcoin’s codebase and retains familiar ideas such as a fixed maximum supply, proof-of-work mining, blocks, and an unspent transaction output accounting model. Its distinguishing feature is optional privacy: users can choose transparent addresses, which expose transaction information publicly, or shielded addresses, which can conceal the sender, recipient, and transferred amount. This arrangement gives users a choice between public auditability and stronger transactional confidentiality. Zcash therefore addresses a basic limitation of many public ledgers, where permanent transaction records can allow addresses and financial activity to be linked through blockchain analysis.

Privacy on Zcash is not equivalent to making the network invisible. Blocks and valid state transitions remain publicly verifiable, while cryptographic proofs establish that shielded transactions obey protocol rules without revealing their protected contents. Users must still consider wallet support, address type, operational security, and any disclosure requirements that apply to them. Transparent activity can be inspected much like activity on other public blockchains, and transfers between transparent and shielded pools can reveal contextual information. ZEC’s broader economic history is distinct from these technical properties; readers examining how the asset has been valued across different periods can consult its historical price record.

How does Zcash work?

Zcash uses proof-of-work consensus, with miners assembling transactions into blocks and competing to satisfy the network’s computational requirements. Nodes independently validate each block, reject invalid spends, and maintain agreement about which outputs remain available. New ZEC enters circulation through block rewards, while the issuance schedule reduces the reward at programmed intervals. Transparent transactions reveal addresses and amounts on the ledger. Shielded transactions instead use zero-knowledge proofs, allowing a sender to demonstrate that funds exist, authorization is valid, values balance, and no coin is spent twice without publishing the protected transaction data. Nullifiers prevent repeated spending of shielded notes without identifying which note was consumed.

The privacy system evolved through several protocol generations. Sapling reduced the computational burden of shielded activity and improved support for mobile wallets. Later upgrades introduced the Orchard shielded protocol and the Halo 2 proving system, removing reliance on the earlier ceremony structure for newly supported shielded transactions. Unified addresses can package multiple receiver types into one user-facing address, enabling compatible wallets to select an appropriate transfer method. Wallet behavior remains important because privacy depends partly on which pools and transaction patterns are used. Separate from protocol mechanics, derivatives participants sometimes study ZEC funding rates and liquidation history, but those measures describe trading venues rather than the operation of the blockchain.

Origins and history

Zcash launched in October 2016 after research into privacy-preserving digital payments and the Zerocash protocol. Its early shielded design used zk-SNARKs, a form of succinct zero-knowledge proof that allowed transaction validity to be confirmed while selected data remained private. The original system required a parameter-generation ceremony, and later ceremonies supported subsequent upgrades. Over time, the network activated changes including Overwinter, Sapling, Blossom, Heartwood, Canopy, and Network Upgrade 5. These events adjusted consensus rules, performance, issuance details, interoperability features, or shielded-payment architecture. Network Upgrade 5, activated in 2022, introduced Orchard and Halo 2 while adding unified addresses.

The project’s history also includes debate about how block issuance should support protocol development, changes to the allocation of block rewards, and efforts to increase practical shielded usage. Zcash retained its capped-supply model and halving schedule while moving away from the original Sprout pool toward newer privacy systems. Because old and new address types can coexist, historical context matters when interpreting wallet compatibility or on-chain activity. Protocol milestones should also be distinguished from the asset’s exchange cycles. A retrospective calculation using the ZEC purchase-history tool can illustrate a hypothetical past holding, but it does not explain the privacy protocol or predict future results.

Zcash's market record at a glance

Zcash has traded for 3,548 days since 2016-10-28. Its all-time high of $20,000.00 came on 2016-10-29, its all-time low of $15.52 on 2019-03-04, and its deepest peak-to-trough decline measured -99.6%. The record includes 1 major drawdown episodes, each documented in Zcash's drawdown history, with the complete year-by-year record in Zcash's price history.

Methodology and coverage

Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.

Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
