What is Bitcoin Cash?
Bitcoin Cash is a peer-to-peer digital currency and public blockchain that separated from Bitcoin in 2017. Its native unit is BCH. The network uses proof-of-work mining, an unspent transaction output model, a capped issuance schedule, and public verification of transactions. Its defining policy choice is support for greater on-chain transaction capacity, allowing more payment activity to fit directly within blocks. Supporters generally emphasize inexpensive transfers and everyday payment use, while the protocol also supports scripts, tokens, and application features within rules intended to preserve straightforward validation.
BCH can be sent without a bank or payment processor, provided the sender controls the relevant private keys and pays an accepted network fee. Recipients independently verify confirmations through nodes or wallet services. Transactions are normally irreversible after inclusion and sufficient confirmation, so address accuracy and key custody matter. The chain’s public ledger exposes transaction flows even though addresses are pseudonymous. Bitcoin Cash should not be confused with Bitcoin: they share history before the split but now have distinct consensus rules, networks, assets, and market histories. The BCH price chronology reflects this separate exchange identity.
How does Bitcoin Cash work?
Miners collect valid transactions, build candidate blocks, and repeatedly hash block headers in an attempt to satisfy the network’s proof-of-work target. A valid block extends the chain recognized by nodes under Bitcoin Cash consensus rules. Mining difficulty adjusts to keep block production near the intended interval despite changes in total hash power. Each transaction consumes earlier unspent outputs and creates new outputs, with digital signatures proving authorization. The difference between input and output values becomes the transaction fee, and miners also receive newly issued BCH according to the scheduled block subsidy.
The subsidy decreases through periodic halvings, preserving a maximum supply near 21 million BCH. Larger block limits provide room for direct settlement but also create resource considerations for node operators, including bandwidth, storage, and validation work. The protocol has undergone scheduled upgrades that introduced or restored capabilities such as new opcodes, improved difficulty adjustment, canonical transaction ordering, and CashTokens. CashTokens lets transactions create fungible tokens and non-fungible tokens with programmable covenant behavior. Exchange-derived BCH funding rates and liquidation data remain outside consensus and cannot change which transactions nodes accept.
Origins and history
Bitcoin Cash originated from a disagreement over Bitcoin’s scaling direction and block-capacity policy. On 1 August 2017, incompatible rules caused the shared ledger to divide, giving holders at the split corresponding balances on two independent chains. Bitcoin Cash increased permitted block capacity and adopted its own difficulty-adjustment rules. Subsequent upgrades further differentiated its transaction format, scripting behavior, and application features. The chain itself later experienced additional splits, including the 2018 separation involving Bitcoin SV, while the BCH network continued under its own consensus rules.
Bitcoin Cash has retained proof of work and the inherited issuance schedule while changing technical limits and scripting capabilities through recurring upgrades. The 2020 introduction of the ASERT difficulty-adjustment algorithm aimed to make block timing more stable when mining power moved between compatible proof-of-work chains. CashTokens arrived in 2023, expanding native token functionality without requiring a separate contract platform. A halving occurred in 2024, reducing the block subsidy under the programmed schedule. Readers placing these protocol events beside exchange cycles can consult the BCH peak-price archive or model a past acquisition through the BCH purchase-history tool.

Methodology and coverage
Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.
Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
