What is Litecoin?

Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency represented by the ticker LTC. It operates through a public blockchain that allows users to transfer value without a central ledger administrator. The protocol shares several structural ideas with Bitcoin, including proof-of-work mining, an unspent transaction output ledger, scheduled reductions in block rewards, and a finite issuance limit. Litecoin changes several parameters, however, including its hashing algorithm, block interval, and total supply. Blocks are targeted approximately every two and a half minutes, and no more than 84 million LTC can be issued under its monetary rules. Earlier valuation cycles are recorded in the Litecoin price history.

LTC is used to pay transaction fees and transfer value between addresses controlled by cryptographic keys. Each coin exists on the ledger as part of an unspent output that can later be consumed by a valid transaction. The shorter block target gives Litecoin a different confirmation rhythm from chains using ten-minute blocks, though confirmation count is only one factor in evaluating settlement risk. Litecoin is divisible into 100 million smaller units per coin, enabling transfers that do not require whole LTC amounts. Its historical peak valuation can be viewed through the Litecoin all-time high page without confusing exchange activity with the protocol’s own transaction history.

How does Litecoin work?

Litecoin uses proof of work with the Scrypt hashing algorithm. Miners assemble valid pending transactions into candidate blocks and repeatedly calculate hashes while changing selected data. A block is acceptable when its hash satisfies the network’s current difficulty target. Nodes then verify its proof, transactions, and adherence to consensus rules before adding it to their local chain. Difficulty adjusts periodically so that block production remains close to the intended interval as mining participation changes. The accepted miner receives newly issued LTC plus transaction fees, creating a recurring incentive to contribute computational work and propagate valid blocks.

The block subsidy declines by half every 840,000 blocks, producing a halving approximately every four years. It began at 50 LTC, fell to 25 LTC in 2015, to 12.5 LTC in 2019, and to 6.25 LTC in 2023. This schedule gradually moves miner compensation toward transaction fees as issuance approaches the 84-million-coin limit. Litecoin also supports Segregated Witness and payment-channel transactions through compatible Lightning Network software. Exchange derivatives remain outside these consensus rules. Forced closures of leveraged positions appear in the Litecoin liquidation history, while perpetual contracts may use Litecoin funding rates to encourage alignment with reference markets.

Origins and history

Litecoin launched in October 2011 as an open-source cryptocurrency derived from the Bitcoin codebase. Its initial design selected Scrypt for proof of work, a two-and-a-half-minute block target, and an issuance ceiling four times Bitcoin’s numerical limit. These parameters established a distinct network while retaining a familiar transaction and ledger model. Litecoin’s early years included changes to mining software, wallet infrastructure, exchanges, and network participation as Scrypt mining moved from general-purpose hardware toward specialized equipment. The scheduled halvings subsequently occurred without changing the predetermined maximum supply.

Litecoin activated Segregated Witness in 2017, separating signature-related data in a way that improved transaction structure and enabled additional scaling tools. A Lightning Network payment was demonstrated around the activation period, illustrating how off-chain payment channels could settle through the Litecoin blockchain. In 2022, Litecoin activated the MimbleWimble Extension Block upgrade. This optional extension-block system allows users to move LTC into a parallel transaction format with confidential amounts and different privacy characteristics, then return it to the transparent ledger. The feature does not make every Litecoin transaction private. Historical purchase scenarios can be examined with the Litecoin purchase calculator.

Methodology and coverage

Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.

Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
