About Bitcoin

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency that allows value to be transferred over the internet without relying on a central bank or payment company to maintain the ledger. Its native unit, bitcoin, is represented by the ticker BTC and can be divided into 100 million smaller units called satoshis. Ownership is recorded through cryptographic keys rather than conventional account credentials. Bitcoin’s publicly documented supply schedule and past adoption cycles can be considered alongside its price history, although market performance is separate from the protocol’s underlying purpose.

The network is designed around scarcity, open participation, and resistance to unilateral alteration. Its rules limit total issuance to 21 million BTC, while newly issued coins enter circulation as rewards for miners. Anyone can run compatible software, verify transactions, and independently check whether blocks follow the consensus rules. This makes Bitcoin a peer-to-peer monetary network as well as a transferable digital asset. Historical comparisons sometimes focus on Bitcoin’s all-time high, but those records do not change its fixed issuance framework.

How does Bitcoin work?

Bitcoin transactions spend previously recorded outputs and assign their value to new conditions, usually requiring a valid digital signature from the recipient’s key. Nodes relay valid transactions across the network, and miners assemble them into candidate blocks. Mining uses proof of work: specialized computers repeatedly hash block data while searching for a result below a difficulty target. The successful block extends the blockchain, and other nodes accept it only after independently validating its transactions, proof, and compliance with supply rules.

The mining difficulty adjusts periodically to keep block production near an average of ten minutes. Approximately every 210,000 blocks, the subsidy paid to miners is halved; the latest scheduled halving occurred in April 2024. Transaction fees supplement the subsidy and are expected to become increasingly important as issuance declines. Layers built around Bitcoin can support faster or more specialized transfers, while the base network prioritizes verifiability and settlement. Leveraged trading around BTC may also be studied through its liquidation history, which reflects exchange activity rather than blockchain consensus.

Origins and history

Bitcoin was introduced through a 2008 white paper describing a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. The network began operating in January 2009 when its genesis block was created. Early activity involved software experimentation, mining on ordinary computers, and direct transfers between participants. Over time, exchanges, custody services, payment tools, and dedicated mining hardware developed around the protocol. Important technical changes have generally been adopted cautiously because incompatible rule changes can divide participants or create separate networks.

Bitcoin’s history includes recurring subsidy halvings, major debates over transaction capacity, and upgrades intended to improve efficiency or programmability. Segregated Witness activated in 2017, changing how signature data is represented and enabling more effective block capacity. Taproot activated in 2021, introducing new signature and scripting capabilities. Bitcoin has also experienced separate chains created through contentious rule changes, while BTC continued under its established consensus. A hypothetical past purchase can be explored with the Bitcoin purchase calculator without implying future results.

Methodology and coverage

Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.

Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
