About BNB

What is BNB?

BNB is a digital asset used across the BNB Chain ecosystem. It pays network fees, supports staking-based security, and serves as a transferable asset in applications running on the chain. BNB originally existed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum before moving to a dedicated blockchain in 2019. The ecosystem now includes BNB Smart Chain, an Ethereum-compatible execution environment, and BNB Beacon Chain historically served governance and asset-transfer functions before its capabilities were consolidated. The asset’s trading chronology is available through the BNB price history.

BNB Smart Chain supports smart contracts, fungible tokens, digital collectibles, exchanges, games, and other decentralized applications. Its compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine allows developers to use familiar contract languages and tools, although BNB Chain has its own validators, governance processes, parameters, and transaction history. BNB is used as gas when transactions consume computation or storage resources. It also participates in validator economics through staking and delegation. Separate market milestones, including historical peaks, are summarized on the BNB all-time-high page.

How does BNB work?

BNB Smart Chain uses a proof-of-staked-authority consensus design. An active validator set produces blocks, while staking and election rules determine participation. Validators execute transactions through an EVM-compatible runtime and reach agreement on the resulting state. Users submit signed transactions containing a nonce, gas settings, destination, value, and optional contract data. Each node checks the signature and protocol rules before applying execution. Because contracts share a common state, applications can interact compositionally, but contract bugs, compromised keys, and poorly designed permissions can still cause irreversible losses.

The protocol includes mechanisms that remove BNB from circulation. These have included scheduled burns tied to a published formula and a real-time burn of a portion of gas fees under BEP-95. Token destruction is verifiable on-chain and differs from coins temporarily locked in staking or contracts. Cross-chain architecture has changed as the ecosystem has consolidated functions and revised bridge arrangements. Derivatives data reflects activity beyond the blockchain itself: BNB liquidation history records forced leveraged closures, while BNB funding-rate history records periodic perpetual-contract transfers.

Origins and history

BNB was issued in 2017 as an Ethereum-based token with a fixed initial supply of 200 million units. In April 2019, it migrated to the newly launched Binance Chain and became a native asset under the BEP-2 token framework. That chain emphasized asset issuance and exchange functionality. BNB Smart Chain launched in September 2020, adding programmable contracts and EVM compatibility while using BNB for transaction fees. The two-chain structure was later presented under the broader BNB Chain name, with interchain communication connecting their respective functions.

Over subsequent years, protocol changes expanded validator participation, adjusted fee mechanics, and developed infrastructure for scaling and data storage. The ecosystem also began retiring the separate Beacon Chain architecture, transferring relevant functions toward BNB Smart Chain through a planned fusion process. This history reflects a transition from an application-specific token to the native asset of a broader smart-contract network. Although its technical ancestry includes Ethereum standards, BNB now follows the consensus rules, validator schedule, fee policies, and governance procedures of BNB Chain rather than Ethereum’s base-layer protocol.

Methodology and coverage

Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.

Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
