What is Uniswap?
Uniswap is a family of decentralized exchange protocols deployed through smart contracts. It allows users to exchange compatible tokens, provide assets to liquidity pools, and build applications that route trades through shared on-chain markets. UNI is the protocol’s governance token, giving holders a mechanism to vote on specified governance proposals and treasury decisions. The token is not required for every swap, and it should be distinguished from the assets deposited into individual pools. Because the contracts are non-custodial, users trade from blockchain wallets and remain responsible for approvals, transaction details, network fees, and the risks of interacting with tokens or interfaces.
Uniswap does not operate like an order book in its classic pool-based versions. Liquidity providers deposit paired assets into smart contracts, and an automated formula determines quotes as the pool’s balances change. Traders pay pool fees, which compensate liquidity providers according to the rules of the relevant version and position. Anyone can create a market for compatible assets, so token availability does not imply quality, legitimacy, or sufficient liquidity. UNI’s historical price record concerns the governance asset’s exchange valuation and should not be confused with swap volume, pool reserves, or protocol fee settings.
How does Uniswap work?
In Uniswap v2, a pool generally holds two tokens and follows a constant-product relationship. A trade adds one asset and removes the other, shifting the quoted exchange rate along the curve. Larger trades relative to available liquidity create greater price impact. Arbitrage activity can bring a pool’s quote closer to prices elsewhere, but that process is performed by market participants rather than an oracle embedded in the basic pool. Liquidity providers receive tokens representing their proportional pool ownership and face the possibility that the relative values of deposited assets change while capital is supplied.
Uniswap v3 introduced concentrated liquidity, allowing providers to allocate capital within chosen price ranges. Positions became non-fungible because each can have different bounds and fee accrual. This design can use capital more efficiently but requires active consideration of range selection; a position outside its range stops earning swap fees and becomes concentrated in one asset. Later protocol designs expanded customization and routing concepts while retaining on-chain settlement. Metrics such as UNI funding-rate history and UNI liquidation data describe leveraged markets on external venues, not automated-market-maker execution.
Origins and history
Uniswap v1 was deployed on Ethereum in 2018, demonstrating permissionless token exchange through automated liquidity pools. V2 followed in 2020 and introduced direct ERC-20 pairs, improved price-oracle functionality, and flash swaps. UNI was introduced in September 2020 alongside an on-chain governance framework and a historical token distribution to certain protocol users and liquidity participants. Governance proposals can pass through defined stages involving proposal power, voting, and execution delays, depending on the contracts and parameters in effect.
Uniswap v3 launched in 2021 with concentrated liquidity, multiple fee tiers, and more flexible liquidity positions. Deployments subsequently appeared on additional compatible networks and scaling systems. Governance has addressed deployments, treasury allocations, delegate processes, and protocol parameters, while interfaces and routing software have evolved separately from the immutable or upgrade-constrained contracts used for swaps. Readers comparing release dates with token valuation can use the UNI peak-price archive. The UNI purchase calculator can illustrate a hypothetical historical acquisition, but it does not model governance participation or liquidity-provider outcomes.

Methodology and coverage
Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.
Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
