About Stellar

What is Stellar?

Stellar is a public blockchain designed for issuing and transferring digital representations of value. Its native asset, lumens, uses the ticker XLM and pays transaction fees, satisfies minimum-balance requirements, and serves as a possible intermediary between issued assets. Accounts can hold XLM and assets created by anchors or other issuers, place offers on a decentralized exchange, and interact with protocol-level payment features. Stellar emphasizes low-cost settlement and explicit asset issuance rather than general-purpose computation of the kind available on some contract platforms, although later additions expanded its programmable-contract capabilities.

An issued asset on Stellar is identified by its code and issuing account, meaning two assets with the same short code can still be different. Users typically establish trustlines that authorize their accounts to hold a particular issued asset. This mechanism makes issuer identity and redemption terms important: the blockchain can record ownership and transfers, but it cannot ensure that an external issuer will redeem a token for bank money, commodities, or another promised item. XLM itself is native to the ledger and requires no trustline. Its historical price record describes exchange valuation rather than the settlement quality of a particular issued asset.

How does Stellar work?

Stellar reaches agreement through the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a federated Byzantine agreement system. Validators select quorum slices representing sets of nodes whose agreement they consider sufficient. Overlapping slices form quorums that allow the network to confirm ledger updates without proof-of-work mining. Nodes propose and ratify transaction sets, close ledgers at short intervals, and reject operations that violate balances, sequence numbers, signatures, trustline rules, or other protocol constraints. The safety of this model depends on suitable quorum configuration and enough overlap among participating validators.

Transactions can contain multiple operations, such as creating accounts, changing trustlines, making payments, managing offers, or invoking contract functions. Path payments can search available order-book liquidity and liquidity pools to convert between assets during settlement. Every account uses a sequence number to prevent replay, and fees deter spam. Minimum reserves limit uncontrolled ledger growth by requiring XLM for account entries and related objects. Soroban added a smart-contract environment with metering and storage rules designed for Stellar. Trading measures such as XLM funding rates and liquidation history exist outside validator consensus.

Origins and history

Stellar launched in 2014 as a network for digital payments and asset issuance. Its early consensus design was replaced by the Stellar Consensus Protocol, whose technical description was published in 2015. The network developed built-in features for trustlines, offers, path payments, multisignature control, and issuer-defined authorization. These tools supported representations of currencies and other assets while maintaining XLM as the native unit for fees and reserves. Stellar’s protocol has been upgraded repeatedly through validator adoption of new versions.

The lumen supply model also changed over time. An earlier annual inflation mechanism was removed through a protocol vote in 2019, and a substantial quantity of lumens was destroyed that year, reducing the planned total supply. More recent development introduced Soroban, extending Stellar with Rust-based smart contracts and a separate resource-pricing model. The network’s payment-oriented ledger and contract environment now coexist, with each transaction subject to protocol validation and fees. Readers aligning these changes with exchange cycles can consult the XLM peak-price archive, while the XLM purchase-history tool illustrates hypothetical past acquisitions without forecasting returns.

Stellar's market record at a glance

Stellar has traded for 3,964 days since 2015-03-11. Its all-time high of $0.9199 came on 2018-01-03, its all-time low of $0.000200 on 2015-03-17, and its deepest peak-to-trough decline measured -96.8%. The record includes 4 major drawdown episodes, each documented in Stellar's drawdown history, with the complete year-by-year record in Stellar's price history.

Methodology and coverage

Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.

Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
