What is Filecoin?
Filecoin is a decentralized network for buying and selling data-storage services. Its native token, FIL, is used for service payments, transaction fees, collateral, and protocol rewards. The network complements content-addressed data systems by adding an economic layer in which storage providers commit capacity, accept storage agreements, and prove that they continue holding specified data. Rather than treating storage as an informal promise, Filecoin records agreements and cryptographic evidence on a blockchain. Clients can select providers according to factors such as capacity, duration, location, retrieval arrangements, and quoted terms, although the protocol cannot by itself guarantee that every stored file is useful or legally permissible.
Filecoin differs from a conventional cloud drive. Applications generally need software that prepares data, negotiates deals, monitors proofs, and retrieves content. Data may also be addressed through the InterPlanetary File System, but Filecoin and IPFS are distinct: IPFS defines content-addressed discovery and transfer, while Filecoin creates incentives and enforceable storage commitments. FIL’s exchange valuation is another separate layer. Its historical price series can provide economic context, but it does not measure whether a particular storage agreement remains available or whether a client has retained sufficient redundancy.
How does Filecoin work?
Storage providers seal client data into sectors and submit cryptographic commitments to the chain. Proof-of-Replication demonstrates that a provider has created a distinct encoded copy of data, while Proof-of-Spacetime demonstrates that the committed data remained stored across an interval. Providers submit ongoing proofs, and failures can lead to penalties or loss of pledged collateral. The blockchain uses these proofs when determining valid state and allocating rewards. Storage deals specify terms such as data commitment, size, duration, and price, and verified-data mechanisms can influence how certain useful datasets are treated within storage incentives.
Filecoin’s consensus and reward system connects a provider’s effective storage power with participation in block production. FIL collateral creates an economic consequence for failing to honor commitments, while block rewards encourage the addition and maintenance of capacity. Retrieval can occur through separate arrangements because proving long-term storage is not identical to delivering bytes quickly on demand. The Filecoin Virtual Machine adds programmable contracts, enabling on-chain systems for deal automation, data services, collateral management, and application logic. Derivatives measures such as FIL funding rates and liquidation history arise on trading platforms and do not determine storage proofs.
Origins and history
Filecoin was described publicly in 2017 as an incentive network for decentralized storage. The main network launched in October 2020 after test networks and development of its proof systems, sealing process, storage market, and blockchain implementation. Early operation demonstrated that verifiable storage could be tied to block rewards and economic penalties at substantial scale. It also exposed practical challenges, including sealing hardware requirements, collateral management, retrieval performance, and the need for client tools that hide complex deal workflows.
Later changes expanded the protocol beyond basic storage agreements. Network upgrades adjusted proof parameters, economics, virtual-machine behavior, and provider operations. The Filecoin Virtual Machine became available in 2023, bringing general programmability compatible with an Ethereum-style execution environment while retaining access to Filecoin-specific state. Additional work has focused on retrieval, data onboarding, programmable storage, and services built around verifiable datasets. These milestones can be compared with the token’s historical peak record, while the FIL purchase calculator offers a retrospective illustration of selected acquisition dates without describing storage performance.

Methodology and coverage
Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.
Price figures use the canonical spot series; derivatives figures use Binance USD-M perpetual records. See each linked page for its own methodology note.
