What is Cardano?
Cardano is a public blockchain platform whose native cryptocurrency is ADA. The network is designed to support value transfers, staking, digital assets, and programmable applications while using proof of stake rather than proof-of-work mining. ADA pays transaction fees, can be delegated to stake pools, and participates in protocol governance under the network’s evolving rules. Cardano separates its ledger and application concepts through a structured protocol architecture, with changes introduced in named development eras. This approach has produced a gradual sequence of upgrades rather than a single unchanging release. The asset’s movement across earlier market cycles is available in the Cardano price history.
Cardano uses an extended unspent transaction output model, commonly shortened to EUTXO. Instead of representing balances as entries in centrally mutable accounts, it treats transactions as consuming existing outputs and creating new ones. The extended model allows outputs to carry additional data used by smart contracts. Cardano can also represent custom tokens directly on its ledger, so many assets do not require a separate contract merely to exist or move. ADA remains the protocol’s native asset and is used for fees and staking-related functions. Its historical valuation peak can be examined separately through the Cardano all-time high record.
How does Cardano work?
Cardano reaches agreement through Ouroboros, a family of proof-of-stake consensus protocols. Time is divided into epochs and slots, and eligible slot leaders produce blocks according to stake-based selection. ADA holders may operate their own staking infrastructure or delegate stake to a pool while retaining control of their coins. Delegation influences the pool’s chance of participating in block production, and protocol rewards are distributed according to defined calculations. Nodes independently validate blocks and transactions, rejecting anything that violates ledger rules. This system replaces energy-intensive hash competition with cryptographic selection and economic participation tied to stake.
Programmable transactions use Plutus scripts and the EUTXO ledger. A transaction can include the inputs, outputs, data, and execution conditions needed to determine its result before submission. Fees depend partly on transaction size and, for scripts, computational resources. Applications may combine smart contracts with native tokens, staking credentials, and governance actions, but users still authorize spending through private keys. ADA derivatives traded away from the blockchain introduce separate risks: collateralized positions can be closed during adverse moves, as shown by the Cardano liquidation history. Perpetual contracts may exchange Cardano funding rates between long and short positions according to venue-specific rules.
Origins and history
Cardano launched in 2017 with ADA transfers and a federated form of block production. Its roadmap has been described through named eras associated with distinct capabilities. The Byron era established the initial network, while the Shelley transition in 2020 expanded decentralized staking and stake-pool operation. The Mary upgrade in 2021 introduced native multi-asset functionality. Later that year, the Alonzo upgrade enabled Plutus smart contracts, allowing developers to build decentralized applications around the EUTXO model. Each transition was implemented through coordinated protocol changes while preserving the continuing Cardano ledger.
Subsequent upgrades concentrated on capacity, developer tooling, governance, and protocol efficiency. The Vasil upgrade in 2022 introduced changes intended to improve script behavior and transaction handling. The Chang upgrade in 2024 began another stage of on-chain governance, expanding the mechanisms through which protocol decisions can be proposed and ratified. Cardano’s history therefore reflects a sequence of planned ledger transitions covering staking, tokens, scripts, scaling work, and governance. A historical ADA acquisition can be explored with the Cardano purchase calculator, while the network’s protocol record remains independently verifiable through public nodes and blockchain explorers.

Methodology and coverage
Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.
