What is Avalanche?
Avalanche is a public blockchain platform whose native asset is AVAX. It supports digital-asset transfers, smart contracts, and separately configured blockchain networks. AVAX pays transaction fees, secures consensus through staking, and provides a common unit within the platform’s architecture. Avalanche’s primary network historically included the Exchange Chain, Platform Chain, and Contract Chain, each designed for a different category of activity. The Contract Chain is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, allowing familiar contract tools and applications to operate under Avalanche consensus. The asset’s trading chronology appears in the AVAX price history.
The platform distinguishes between its consensus protocols and the virtual machines that define transaction behavior. This separation lets a chain use Avalanche’s validator framework while applying rules suited to a particular application. Custom networks, formerly called subnets and increasingly described through Avalanche L1 terminology, can choose validator requirements, fee assets, and virtual machines. AVAX remains central to staking on the primary network. Historical market peaks are summarized on the AVAX all-time-high page, but those events are separate from consensus and application execution.
How does Avalanche work?
Avalanche consensus relies on repeated random sampling among validators. Rather than having every validator communicate exhaustively with every other validator in each round, a node queries a small sample of peers and updates its preference when responses pass defined thresholds. Repetition causes honest participants to converge rapidly on accepted decisions. The Snowman protocol adapts this approach to a linear chain suitable for smart contracts. Validators stake AVAX and validate the primary network, while protocol rules address uptime, staking duration, and rewards without using proof-of-work mining.
The Contract Chain executes EVM transactions and charges fees in AVAX, with the base fee burned under its fee mechanism. The Platform Chain manages validator and chain-level operations, while the Exchange Chain uses a directed acyclic graph structure for certain asset transfers. Cross-chain movement requires defined export and import transactions rather than treating the chains as one undifferentiated state. External leverage operates under different rules: AVAX liquidation history records forced closures, while AVAX funding-rate history records periodic payments between perpetual-contract positions.
Origins and history
Avalanche’s consensus ideas were described publicly in 2018 through a paper introducing a family of metastable consensus protocols based on repeated subsampling. The Avalanche mainnet launched in September 2020 with its multi-chain primary network and AVAX staking. Its early design aimed to combine rapid finality, open validator participation, and support for multiple execution environments. EVM compatibility on the Contract Chain provided a migration path for contracts and tools already built around Ethereum conventions, while the surrounding architecture retained Avalanche-specific consensus and validation.
Subsequent upgrades adjusted fees, virtual-machine behavior, validator operations, and cross-chain communication. The Apricot series introduced several Contract Chain changes, including a dynamic fee mechanism. Later releases improved networking and created mechanisms for communication among custom chains. The platform’s terminology and architecture have continued evolving as custom networks became more autonomous Avalanche L1s. Throughout these revisions, AVAX has remained the staking and fee asset of the primary network. Avalanche’s history reflects a modular approach in which consensus, execution, validation policy, and application-specific chain design can develop as related but distinct layers.

Methodology and coverage
Price history uses a canonical spot series aggregated across major exchanges, with per-row source provenance; yearly and monthly returns compare last close to first open of each period. Drawdowns are measured close-to-close while all-time highs/lows use intraday extremes. The biggest run figure is the largest qualifying trough-to-peak gain since 90 days after this asset's first reliable price record - it reflects the single largest rise on record, not a repeatable cycle, and excludes runs built on sparse or unconfirmed price data. Derivatives metrics use Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual records; deleveraging events are identified from abnormal open-interest contractions under price stress, ranked by a proprietary composite.
